Regardless of whether they do that or not, Smith has emerged as a frontrunner for the sport’s Coach of the Year award, with the sixth-year head coach leading the way in the U.S. Betting Report COY odds board entering the penultimate week of the CFB regular season.

Who Could Topple Smith In Coach Of The Year Race?
The other main contender for our COY award is first-year Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm, who has already exceeded the Cardinals’ year-end win total from 2022 with two games to play.
Brohm has the Cardinals sitting at 9-1 with a road game against Miami this weekend before the Governor’s Cup showdown against Kentucky to close out the season on Nov. 25.
From there, Louisville will play FSU in the ACC title game in early December, with a realistic shot at sneaking their way into the CFP should they run the table.
Brohm’s coaching acumen has never been doubted, with the 52-year-old going 30-10 at WKU and 36-34 at Purdue before returning to the school that he led as the team’s quarterback in the early 1990s.
His first season back in Louisville shows that Brohm is a tour de force on the sidelines, however, putting him in the No. 2 spot on our USBR COY list, at +300.
Other contenders for this year’s award include Arizona’s Jedd Fisch, who has overseen a program renaissance that’s seen Arizona go from 1-11 in 2021 to 7-3 in 2023, with games against Utah and ASU to go.
Fisch, who clocks in at +500 to win the USBR COY award, beat out other contenders, such as Kansas’ Lance Leipold (+750) and Mike Norvell of Florida State (+1100) on our list, showing how far the Wildcats have come under his watch since the longtime assistant coach arrived in Tucson three seasons ago.
