Most Popular NASCAR Driver In Each State: Who Takes Checkered Flag?

Most Popular NASCAR Driver

The most popular NASCAR driver depends on who you ask. And with the wild superspeedway action of the season-opening Daytona 500 around the corner, legal online sports betting favorites also depend on who you ask.

The Cup Series is starting this month with the biggest race in NASCAR on Feb. 18 at Daytona International Speedway. The series has an official award for most popular driver, but all you have to do is listen to the reaction from the grandstands right after a race (or look at social media anywhere, anytime) to know that opinions vary wildly.

To find out who the favorites really are, used Google Trends, searching “NASCAR” over a 12-month span from Feb. 7, 2023, to Feb. 7, 2024. We then found the most searched NASCAR driver in search volume in that state. All full-time or part-time NASCAR Cup Series drivers were included.

Here are the drivers who won three or more states, according to our research. And don’t forget, you can turn to USBR for reviews of mobile sports betting apps and more.

Elliott, Larson Most Popular NASCAR Drivers

Chase Elliott, the son of legendary NASCAR driver Bill Elliott and a Cup series champion in his own right, has been named the most popular driver in the series the past six years in a row. This should come as no surprise — Bill Elliott won the honor 16 times, a series record, one more than Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Oddsmakers at BetMGM Sportsbook have installed Chase Elliott as a co-favorite at +1100 odds to win the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18 (2:30 p.m. Eastern, Fox). He’s tied with Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Chris Buscher and defending Cup series champion Ryan Blaney atop the operator’s board. The fact that there are five drivers at the top, and that they have such long odds as favorites, reflects the unpredictable nature of races at Daytona International Speedway.

Elliott won the Cup series title in 2020 and earned multiple race victories each season from 2018 to 2022. His stunning winless campaign in 2023, in which he missed several races with an injury and did not qualify for the NASCAR playoffs, does not seem to have dampened enthusiasm for the 28-year-old Georgia native.

In our survey, Elliott was named most popular in eight states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota and West Virginia. But he has company for that honor from his Hendrick Motorsports teammate.

Kyle Larson, the 2021 Cup champion, is the +550 favorite with Caesars Sportsbook to earn his second season title in 2024. The 31-year-old also won eight states, but not his native California, where Bubba Wallace was the most searched. States that Larson won by our reckoning were Hawaii, Idaho, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont and Wyoming.

Below is a full state-by-state breakdown. Note that Kevin Harvick has retired (he will be in the Fox Sports broadcast booth for the 500 and the rest of the races in the first half of the season). Also, Jimmie Johnson is slated to run a part-time Cup Series schedule, as he did in 2023. For Daytona 500 odds, season odds and numerous prop bets for both the season-opening race and the season, turn to DraftKings Sportsbook.
