Indiana Sports Betting Up Big, Casinos Down Slightly in August

It was a mixed bag for gaming operators in the Hoosier State during the month of August, with big gains in sports betting handle offset by a slight decline in casino revenue.

Overall, Indiana sports betting took in $238,079,855 worth of wagering handle in August, which was up 16.8% from July’s total of $203,788,074. Indiana sportsbooks chipped in $23,539,784 worth of taxable aggregate gaming revenue in August, up 1.2% from July’s total of $23,257,765.

Sports betting taxes came in at $2,236,280 in August, up 1.2% from July. Through the first eight months of the year, Indiana’s mobile sports betting apps and retail locations have taken in just under $2.5 billion in handle, averaging out to $310.9 million per month.

Indiana Casinos See Slight Decline in August  

The song was quite different in August for Indiana’s casinos, which saw a slight drop in taxable aggregate gaming revenue and total casino win during the month.

Overall, Indiana casinos took in a total win of $194,140,851 — down 8.7% from July’s total of $212,730,150. As far as taxable AGR was concerned, casinos raked in $176,719,567, which was down 8.3% from July.

On an individual casino basis, the leader was Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana at $31,604,874, followed by Horseshoe Casino Indianapolis ($27,943,119), Horseshoe Casino Hammond ($24,408,916), Caesars Southern Indiana ($18,851,040) and Harrah’s Hoosier Park ($18,428,805). The two Horseshoe Casinos in the state feature Caesars Sportsbook locations.

So far, Hoosier State sportsbooks have the third-largest sports betting handle of the eight states that have reported totals for August, ranking between Maryland ($263.7 million) and Iowa ($141.3 million). The national sports betting handle leader for August is New York at $1.1 billion.
